Concept Art from Vincenzo Natali's Netflix adaptation of "In The Tall Grass," a story my dad and I wrote together for Esquire a few years back. Still kind of can't believe this one is happening. Vincenzo scripted the picture himself and it's brutally terrifying. More news on this one as it develops.
Can't wait for the movie's probable 2019 release? Why not hunt down Splice, Vincenzo's alluring and unsettling work of body horror from 2009? Wonderfully fucked up. Go get a faceful.
While we're talkin' horror films, you all got out to see Hereditary, didn't you? Even in a golden era for the genre (we've been spoiled by great fright flicks in the last decade), this one is in a category of its own. It belongs on the same shelf with The Exorcist, The Changeling, and It Follows, classics of terror and suspense that challenge the viewer intellectually as well as emotionally. True masterpieces are rare and only come along maybe once or twice a decade. This is one.
My sixth book, Strange Weather, is out in paperback. For the most part, these stories were fun to write. Of course, I'm not sure that matters. I literally-not-metaphorically went crazy writing HORNS and that turned out pretty well. Still, it makes me glad that people are discovering a book that gave me such pleasure to work on. Hope you have a blast with it.
I've been keeping busy creatively: I've got a good new short story going, but it's splitting time with a good new novel. At least I hope they're good. You're never really able to judge yourself -- the verdict on any given piece of work belongs to the reader, not the writer. Maybe it's more accurate to say that I'm enjoying the work and hoping for the best.
I'm also in talks with friends about various comic projects and I think there's a chance 2019 and 2020 could have me deep in the funny book business again. Every time I read another jaw-dropping issue of Saga I want to get back in the game. I don't know how BKV and Fiona Staples do it: how they manage to break my heart every time out.
On a practical level, if Netflix follows through on the straight-to-series order for a Locke & Key TV show, then I guess I'd like to take a swing at World War Key: Revolution, a book Gabe and I have been talking about for years. It would be the best possible timing for a return to Keyhouse.
Also on the TV front, there's been some exciting preliminary casting news for AMC's NOS4A2. I can't wait to see what's (who's) next. Holy shit, guys, a NOS4A2 show. How crazy? Seriously, how f'n crazy??
You'll find this in comic stores right around the 4th of July. Scribe Jason Ciaramella takes Eric's filthy cape and filthy mind out for another unforgettable ride, and artist Zach Howard delivers some of the most grisly and stunning pages to be found anywhere. It's a pretty gonzo outing, even by Cape standards... go give it a shot.
I gotta figure out how to do a poll within the newsletter. That would be fun. I could do a new poll every issue. Hm. Something to research. I obviously need to begin a massive data mining operation to uncover the secret impulses, desires, anxieties, and shopping habits of my readers. Well, maybe next time out.
Man, I think that's all I got for you!
